It wasn't till I repeatedly came home to a chess board on the floor with pieces scattered everywhere that I began to question whether these dogs might be playing chess when I am not around. Finally I set the board up and made a move and one of the dogs came over and pushed his pawn forward. Since then, we have been playing games at least twice a week, though I can't say that they play very well. Castling, en-passent and pawn promotion are all understood by Shar-Pei. However, Shar-Pei cannot count to three so the rule "Game is drawn if a position repeats three times" is not understood or used. Only the brightest of Shar-Pei chess players can perform a search to a depth of two moves, but no Shar-Pei will examine check at the deepest level.
You can set both black and white to Shar-Pei and the Shar-Pei will play each other, set neither to Shar-Pei and the game can be played by two people, complete with game log. Or of course, set only white or black to Shar-Pei and experience the competition that only a Shar-Pei can give.
